Founded in 1977, the Academy of Chinese Studies in New Orleans is a teaching and learning school of Chinese established by local Chinese American community and a registered non-profit organization in the state of Louisiana. The school is led by the principal under the supervision of the Board of Directors. Ms. Xiaoning Kong is the current principal. The Academy adheres to the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice’s joint anti-discrimination policies, which prohibits discrimination basis on race, color, national origin, age, religion, sexual orientation, economic status, or other reasons (such as physical disability, etc.).
We offer eight different levels of classes from kindergarten to high school, plus an AP Chinese class, three international children’s classes and three international adult classes. Electives include folk dance, handicrafts, basic calligraphy, reading appreciation, oral dialogue, children’s painting, and other courses. 40% of our language teachers have master’s degrees or beyond, and 60% have more than 5 years of teaching experience. Our classroom teachings are engaging, and our methods of delivery are diverse. While learning the language, students can also expect to learn and experience Asian culture. We strive to promote Chinese culture and serve the community with passion and love.
For more than 40 years, the Academy has only temporarily closed twice: due to Hurricane Katrina and at the beginning part of COVID-19. With the full support of the students, parents, and the community, we have overcome significant difficulties during those times. Compared to the early days of the school 40 years ago when it had only about ten students and the textbooks were self-written and teaching aids home-made, we are in a very difference place now. After the diligent and hard work of several generations of teachers, the Academy has achieved the impossible and seen significant growth. Let’s keep the tradition and keep moving forward!
